Lesson 1: What is Sustainable Development?
Introduction
With the worsening effects of unhealthy development practices to the environment, different countries including the Philippines have integrated sustainable development in their development plans.
Sustainable Development is a kind of development that meets the needs of the present and the future generations – a pathway to the future we want for all.
The 17-point Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations was a concept adopted by its 193 member states and global civil society to end poverty, protect the environment and ensure prosperity for all.

The 17 SDG have cross-cutting issues which may directly or indirectly relate to the environment. Specifically, these goals are:
- SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
- SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
- SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
- SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
- SDG 13: Climate Action
- SDG 14: Life Below Water
- SDG 15: Life on Land
Pillars of Sustainability
Sustainable Development is not a fixed concept, rather it is a culturally-directed search for a dynamic balance in the relationships between the social, economic and natural system (UNESCO-UNEVOC, 2006). That is why in order to attain sustainable development, it is imperative to succeed in all of the elements of sustainable development.
